The name comes Shirodhara from the Sanskrit words shiro (head) and dhara (flow)
The procedure of Shirodhara
Shirodhara is the gentle, constant application of warm oil on the third eye or chakra point just above and between the eyebrows. When the warm oil is being gently poured on your forehead, it induces a deep state of relaxation, soothes the nervous system, stimulates the endocrine system [pituitary gland] and awakens the third eye.
Shirodhara is a great treatment for a compromised nervous system. Can help relieve symptoms of
- anxiety
- stress
- fatigue
- hypertension
It relieves tension, worry, fear and headache as well as depression. It regulates mood and gives feelings of pleasure and relaxation.
Shirodhara is an amazing, unique body therapy from the ancient natural medical system Ayurveda. Ayurveda translates as “science of life” and is based on an ancient system that believes our personality or constitution is predominantly one of three Doshas (forces in the body that act on different systems): Kapha, Vata or Pitta. The aim of an ayurvedic massage is to balance out this dominance for total wellbeing.
Shirodhara has a profound impact on the nervous system. That means, the treatment directly and immediately calms, relaxes and has a cleansing effect on the mind and nerves.
In the western alternative medicine world, I personally do not know of another therapy that has a similar impact on the nervous system, apart from an established meditation practice.
